Abstract

Carbon electrodes for use in electrolytic cells for the production of chlorine from alkali metal chloride are impregnated with an alkali metal silicate, preferably in solution. 5-15 per cent sodium silicate is preferred, although all the other alkali metals are named, and it may be liquid with an Na2O : SiO2 ratio 1 : 2.6-3.22, or solid orthosilicate, supersilicate, or metasilicate or the pentahydrate thereof, or mixtures thereof. Impregnation is effected by successive application of vacuum, and of pressure with immersion. The electrode may be graphitized, or pitch-impregnated, before impregnation, and may be heated after impregnation.
