Abstract

801,106. Electrolytic regeneration of ferricyanide photographic bleach baths. ILFORD, Ltd. Jan. 21, 1957 [March 19, 1956; July 10, 1956], Nos. 8565/56 and 21313/56. Class 41. [Also in Group XX] Ferricyanide -bromide baths for bleaching photographic elements (see Group XX) are regenerated by electrolysis, the cathode being immersed in a solution containing bromide ions which is prevented from mixing with the bath liquid. Preferably, the catholyte is an alkali bromide and is separated from the bath liquid by a cation exchange membrane 10 of a cell 4. In another form, Fig. 1 (not shown), the catholyte solution is contained in a glass cell having a sintered glass base plugged with agar gel and the alkali formed is neutralized by the addition of aqueous hydrogen bromide. A porous ceramic partition may alternatively be used. As shown, in a selfneutralizing cathodic arrangement an additional cathode compartment 11 containing a solution of hydrogen bromide and having an anion exchange membrane 12 is provided. Of the carbon electrodes 2, 7 and 13 either 7 or 13 may be omitted.
