Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the consumption of power in the ion exchange membrane electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal chloride solution by the procedure in which electrolysis is made at low electrolytic tath voltage by providing vapor-liquid permeable spacer between electrode and ion exchange membrane so as to keep a specific interval between them. CONSTITUTION:In electrolyzing an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution by using an electtolytic bath in which anode and cathode are partitioned by ion exchange resin, a vapor- liquid permeable spacer is put between electrode and ion exchange membrane to prevent the damage to ion exchange membrane caused by the contact of electrode. And, the preferable interval between the ion exchange membrane and the anode is 0.5 to 8 mm, more preferable 1 to 7 mm, much more preferably 2 to 6 mm, and also the preferable interval between the ion exchange membrane and the cathode is 0.5 to 10 mm, more preferably 1 to 8 mm, and much more preferably 3 to 7 mm.
