Abstract

PURPOSE: To lower electrolytic voltage and decrease the consumption of electric power used for electrolysis, by applying electric current to a cathode through an electroconductive porous object in the electrolysis of alkali chloride aqueous solution by the ion exchange membrane method using the gas diffusion electrode as the cathode.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolytic cell 1 of alkali chloride aqueous solution of NaCl ect. is separated into an anode chamber 3 and a cathode chamber 5 by using an ion exchange membrane 7 and an anode 2 is arranged in the anode chamber, also a gas diffusion electrode is used for a cathode 8 and an electroconductive porous object 4 is adhered to its face opposed to the cathode chamber 5 and the cathode 8 as the gas diffusion electrode is constituted to face to a gas chamber 6. Because the electric current is applied to the anode 2 and the cathode 8 through the electroconductive object 4, the electric current passes the entire face of the cathode 8 as the gas diffusion electrode, the contact resistance decreases, the rise of the electrolytic voltage is prevented and the electrolysis is done by the small power consumption.
