Abstract

937,187. Electrolytic production of borates. UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 30, 1961 [July 28, 1960], No. 26378/60. Class 41. A process for increasing the B 2 O 3 content of alkali metal or substituted or unsubstituted ammonium borates comprises electrolysing an aqueous solution of the borate in a cell provided with a cationic permselective membrane so that the alkali metal or ammonium ions are selectively removed from the solution and stopping the electrolysis before the ratio X 2 O: B 2 O 3 in the solution exceeds 1: 5 (X being an alkali metal atom or substituted or unsubstituted ammonium group). The progress of the electrolysis can be followed by measuring the pH and can be stopped, e.g. automatically, when the pH reaches that appropriate to the desired product. The anode compartment contains the aqueous borate and the cathode compartment may contain the corresponding hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate. The electrodes may be Pt, other noble metals, Fe or C. In an example of the formation of Na 2 O.5B 2 O 3 the anode compartment contains borax solution and the cathode compartment aq. NaOH. The electrodes are of Pt gauze. The cationic permselective membrane is of a sulphonated polystyrene. Electrolysis is at 5 v. for 1 hr. 50 mins. and the current efficiency of the process is 85%.
