[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A carbon or graphite electrode used in the electrolysis of aluminium or in an electric furnace is protected by impregnation before use in an aqueous solution of alkali metal borate and mono- or di-basic ammonium phosphate with a small amount of a colloidal binding agent such as gum arabic. The solution contains borax from 10 per cent up to saturation at room temperature preferably 25-35 per cent, and gum arabic 0.3-5.0 per cent. The electrodes are impregnated and dried just before setting them in a furnace or as negative electrodes in the three layer process of refining aluminium as described in Specification 469,361, [Group XXXVI], which is referred to.
