Abstract

In the production of a supported palladium catalyst wherein a carrier is treated with a palladium-containing liquor in such an amount that the liquor is all taken up by the carrier, the liquor being of sufficient concentration to give a catalyst of the desired palladium content, the carrier is treated with an aqueous solution of a base derived from an alkali or alkaline-earth metal before and (or) after the treatment with a palladium-containing liquor, and a complete or partial drying of the carrier is effected between the treatment with a base and the treatment with a palladium-containing liquor. Specified carriers are activated alumina, silica-alumina, silica gel or an artificial alumino-silicate, e.g. sodium aluminium silicate. The palladium may be reduced to the metallic state before the catalysts are used. The catalysts are particularly useful in the production of hydrogen peroxide by reduction of an alkylated or arylated anthraquinone followed by oxidation of the corresponding anthraquinol, and Example 1 includes a description of the reduction of 2-ethylanthraquinone in a solvent mixture comprising xylene and methylcyclohexyl acetate in the presence of a catalyst prepared as described above.
