Abstract
Alkylated or arylated anthraquinhydrones or anthraquinols are obtained by hydrogenating the anthraquinones in a solvent or solvent mixture in presence of a catalyst (see Group III), comprising metallic palladium deposited on magnesium oxide, partially hydrated magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide. The hydrogenation may be a step in the production of hydrogen peroxide (see Group III). Examples describe the hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone and 2 - tert. - butyl - anthraquinone. Specifications 465,070; 508,081, 686,574, [both in Group III], 718,305; 718,306, [Group III], and 718,307 are referred to.ALSO:Hydrogen peroxide is produced by hydrogenation of an alkylated or arylated anthraquinone in a solvent or solvent mixture in presence of metallic palladium deposited on magnesium oxide, partially hydrated magnesium oxide, or magnesium hydroxide, to the corresponding alkylated or arylated anthraquinhydrone or alkylated or arylated anthraquinol, which, after separation of the catalyst, is oxidized by means of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas to hydrogen peroxide, with regeneration of the alkylated or arylated anthraquinone. The palladium catalyst material preferably has a particle size corresponding to a screen aperture between 0.001 in. and 0.1 in. and is suspended in the solution, or is in a fixed bed. In examples, 2 - ethylanthraquinone and 2 - tert - butyl - anthraquinone are hydrogenated in a solvent mixture comprising methyl cyclohexanol acetate and benzene or alkyl benzenes, using catalysts obtained by (1) heating precipitated magnesium hydroxide to 300 DEG C and impregnating with sodium chlorpalladite solution or with palladous chloride solution, (2) mixing caustic soda solution with light magnesium oxide, drying at 120 DEG C and grinding, and impregnating with sodium chlorpalladite solution, (3) impregnating heavy magnesium oxide with a mixture of sodium chlorpalladite solution, acetone, and ethyl acetate. The deactivated catalyst may be reactivated by washing with benzene and heating in air at 250 DEG C, or by washing with benzene, drying at 120 DEG C, and washing repeatedly with caustic soda solution followed by washing and drying.
