Abstract
In the refining of crude benzene by contact with a hydrogen-containing gas (other than pure hydrogen) and a hydrogenation catalyst, the hydrogen-containing gas is compressed to a hydrogen partial pressure equal to the reaction pressure required using pure hydrogen, expanding at least part of the gas separated from the refined benzene and using in the compression the work obtained in the expansion and using in the expansion the heat produced by the compression. The expansion and compression may be connected by using two connected machines or a single machine with connected expansion and compression cylinders. The refining is effected at 320-420 DEG C. and 40-50 atmospheres of hydrogen in the presence of oxides or sulphides of metals of Group 5, 6 or 8 supported on ceramic carriers.
