Abstract

288,216. Ges. fur Linde's Eismachinen Akt.-Ges. April 4, 1927, [Convention date]. Materials for purifying.-In the separation by cooling of gaseous mixtures containing acetylene, traces of the latter are removed before cooling by passage of the gases over heated catalysts. The gases, such as air or coke over gases, are passed over catalysts such as nickel, copper, iron, or aluminium or their oxides or the partially dehydrated hydroxides of aluminium and iron at temperatures between 100' and 400' C. In the presence of hydrogen the acetylene is hydrogenated giving mainly ethylene, or the acetylene may polymerize to form higher hydrocarbons, or, in the absence of hydrogen, the acetylene may decompose forming carbon and hydrogen. Suitable apparatus comprise periodically reversible regenerators for the inflowing and outflowing gases which are to brought into heat interchange. relation, means for supplying the necessary heat, and a reaction chamber filled with catalyst and arranged between the regenerators, all heated parts being insulated.
