Abstract

732,567. Valve amplifying circuits. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. Oct. 5, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 27478/52. Class 40 (6). In a wide-band amplifier comprising a pair of valves V1, V2 with inputs and outputs connected in parallel, the outputs being connected together at the succeeding stage; non- linear, e.g. rectifier elements W1, W2 respectively are connected in the grid leads and the biasing arrangements are such that in the event of a short circuit between grid and cathode of one of the valves, the associated non- linear element becomes of high impedance, so that the input to the other valve is still effective. The valves are provided with individual bias resistors R5, R6 respectively and also with two resistors R1, R4 common to both cathode circuits, grid leaks R2, R3 being of high value and returned to the negative line, while the secondary of the input transformer T1 is returned to the common point of resistors R1, R4. In normal operation the elements W1, W2 are biased to be conductive by the potential drop across resistor R1 ; a grid-tocathode short in either valve, however, produces a bias of reverse sign across the corresponding element W1 or W2, since the bias in question is then obtained from resistor R4.
