Abstract

732,549. Stop mechanism for drawing head. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J. April 21, 1953 [May 2,1952], No. 11193/52. Class 120(2). In a stop mechanism for a drawing head of a textile machine repeated engagement is brought about between a pivoted detector and the sliver passing through the machine, the relative motion causing this engagement having a component transverse to the general direction of travel of the sliver, so that provided the sliver is moving at a speed greater than a critical value in relation to the transverse component of the relative motion, the detector is rocked about its pivot so as to prevent either the detector or a part acting with it from coming into either direct or indirect contact with an abutment, while under other conditions, the detector or the part acting with it engages the abutment either directly or indirectly and so causes the operation of a device for stopping the machine. As shown sliver 1 in its passage from drawing rollers 3, 4 to delivery rollers 5, 6 passes over a sliver plate 7 where it is engaged repeatedly by a detector member 8 pivoted at 10 to an arm 11 fixed to a rocker shaft 12 which is rocked by means of an eccentric 15 driven by gear 16 on the shaft of delivery roller 5. The eccentric is connected with the shaft 12 by a rod 22 passing through a bush 23 rockable on a link 24 secured to the shaft 12. A compression spring 26 is located between one side of bush 23 and an enlarged collar 27 on the end of rod 22 and is of such strength that under normal operational conditions the force in the rod 22 is insufficient to compress it. During normal operation as soon as the tip of the detector 8 engages the sliver it is carried forwardly with it about the pivot 10 as shown in Fig. 3. When the sliver is missing or is stationary or moving at a greatly reduced speed, however, the detector is not rocked about its pivot when it engages the sliver, or, if the sliver is missing, the plate 7, and the motion of the detector is thus positively stopped and as a consequence the motion of the shaft 12 is correspondingly stopped. The rod 22 continues to move to the right, however, and in doing so compresses the spring 26 and also causes an arm 31 by engagement of the collar 27 with it, to be rocked about its pivot 32 such that its opposite end 33 operates a micro-switch 34, as shown in Fig. 4, to stop the machine. In a second embodiment the sliver plate is made to oscillate instead of the detector to bring about the repeated engagement of the sliver with the detector. Means are also described whereby the mechanism can also be caused to operate when choking of the sliver occurs. Specification 706,192 is referred to.
