Abstract

732,373. Thermally - actuated valves. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1953 [Aug. 29, 1962], No. 21788/52. Class 135. In a thermally-actuated valve inwhich the valve 1 screwing on the stem 11 is lifted off its seat 2 by, e.g. the thermal rod 35 acting on the stem, the valve is set to close at a definite temperature by turning the stem from the knob 16 through transmission means including, e.g., spindle 13, slotted arms 17 engaging radial projections 23 on a disc 24 loosely mounted on stem 11 and loaded by spring 33 to engage two diametrical axial projections on the disc with a pair of a number of peripheral serrations 26 in a plate 27 secured to stem 11, and the transmission means is adapted to enable the screw 11 to be rotated independently of the knob and spindle for varying the range of adjustment of the valve. The disc rotates between two spacer washers 28, 29 non-rotatably but slidably mounted on the stem and having a screw-driver slot 38 whereby, after removing the knob 16 and screw 15, the disc 24 can be depressed against spring 33 out of engagement with the plate 27 and the plate and stem rotated so that other serrations engage the disc and the valve operates within a different temperature range. The valve is prevented from rotating by engag. ing a casing stop which also acts as a limit stop for the knob. The casing is formed by two nested cups 3, 4, secured at their bottoms to a sleeve 9 carrying the thermal rod and tube. Specification 689,142 is referred to.
