Abstract
730,813. Pipe couplings. DE LAVAL SEPARATOR CO. Jan. 1, 1953 [Jan. 2, 1952], No. 46/53. Class 99(1). To accommodate out-of-roundness in glass, stainless steel &c. pipes 10, 11 provided with tapered ends 12, 13 drawn together into sealing engagement with a resilient gasket 15 by means of internally-tapered rings 16, 17, a band 23, which is made of a yielding material such as hard rubber, is split at 23a and hinged intermediate the ends so formed, is interposed between each pipe-end and the corresponding ring. The hinge may be formed by weakening the material locally by a groove 23b, and the ends of the band may be aligned by providing a tongue 25 on one part to interlock with a groove in the other. The tongue and the grooves provide escape paths for liquid leaking at the gasket 15. A flange 15<SP>1</SP> facilitates handling the gasket and centres it in the coupling.
