Abstract
727,783. Control systems for electromagnets; transmitting mechanical power. WARNER ELECTRIC BRAKE & CLUTCH CO. Aug. 10, 1953, No. 22021/53. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] To promote rapid change of flux in an electromagnet when its normal supply switch is opened or closed, a condenser charged to a substantially higher voltage than the normal energization voltage of the magnet is discharged through the magnet substantially simultaneously with the operation of the supply switch, the discharge being in such a direction as to assist the flux charge arising from operation of the supply switch. As applied to the simultaneous control of an electromagnetically-operated friction clutch 10, 17, 23 for coupling an output shaft 12 to a driving member 11, and an electrically-operated friction brake 23, 26, 35 for the shaft 12, the windings 17, 35 are normally energized from a low-voltage source 39, 38 and condensers 63 are normally charged to high-voltage from a source 67, 68. Upon closure of the " start " button 47, relay 44 is energized, over the normally-closed contacts 48 of " stop " relay 49, thereby completing an energizing circuit for the clutch winding 17 at contact 56, whilst de-energizing the brake coil 35 by the opening of contact 43. To de-clutch the shaft, button 51 is pressed; relay 49 responds, holds-in over contacts 52, opens the clutch-energizing circuit at contacts 54, closes contacts 65 to discharge the condensers 63 through the windings 17, 35 in series, in such a direction as to cause rapid collapse of flux in the clutch and rapid build-up of flux in the brake, and opens contacts 48 in the energizing circuit of relay 44. This relay then drops out, subject to delay by a condenser 57, and applies normal energization to the brake winding 35 by closure of contacts 43, whilst de-energizing relay 49 by opening of contacts 56, which also maintain the clutch deenergized upon re-closure of contacts 54.
