Abstract
690,048. Electromagnetic relays; protective cut-out systems. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and CHRISP, G. F. May 24, 1951 [June 2, 1950], No. 13858/50. Class 38 (v) A relay with a pivoted armature A has an operating coil E and a controlling coil F which when energized produces flux in a closed or substantially-closed circuit FDB thereby increasing the reluctance of a member D which also carries the flux of the coil E and causing the armature A to be released. The coils E, F may, as shown, be arranged in series in a circuit and respectively shunted by opposed rectifiers M, M<SP>1</SP>. The Figure shows a protective system for coal-cutting machinery P. Current in the right direction, such as from a transformer S<SP>1</SP> through a rectifier R<SP>1</SP> when a switch R is closed will accordingly energize the coil E, cause the attraction of the armature A and the closing of a switch Q. A fault in the pilot circuit S will have the effect of shortcircuiting the rectifier R<SP>1</SP> so that alternating current will flow and the coils E and F will be energized respectively at alternate half-waves, which has the effect of releasing the armature A. Should there be a fault in the trailing cable Q1 a coil T will be energized which similarly causes a release of the armature A.
