Abstract

[Also in Division H2] An overload cut-out arrangement disengaging a clutch, or stopping a driving machine associated with a clutch, on occurrence of slip between the driving and driven clutch members comprises a magnetic pick-off connected to cut-out relays through the intermediary of a silicon controlled rectifier. As shown, a soft iron core of a magnetic pick-off 6 projects slightly from the periphery of the coil supporting member of an electromagnetic multiplate clutch for co-operation with equispaced peripheral fingers of an outer clutch member. The pick-off 6 acts through a slip ring on a silicon controlled rectifier 7 controlling a relay 8. A relay 3 having a contact 5 in the clutch energizing circuit is energized through parallel paths one of which includes a push-button starter switch 1 and the other of which a contact 9 of the relay 8 and a holding contact ,4. In operation of the clutch, the push-button 1 is depressed, and kept so until the clutch rotates synchronously, to (i) open a-switch 2 in the relay 8/rectifier 7 circuit to prevent clutch disengagement during starting, and (ii) energize the relay 3 to close the contact 5 for clutch engagement and to close the holding contact 4. On clutch synchronism the button 1 is released for the contact 2 to complete and prepare the relay 8/rectifier 7 circuit. On clutch slip the contact 9 is opened, via the pick-off 6, rectifier 7 and relay 8, thereby breaking the holding circuit of the relay 3 to open the contacts 4, 5 and disengage the clutch. In a non-electromagnetically operated clutch the soft iron core of the pick-up is replaced by a permanent magnet core.
