Abstract

A rapid starting device for a film transport mechanism, which in operation is driven at a specified speed by a synchronous motor (not shown), comprises a flywheel 6, driven at an initial speed substantially greater than the specified speed, and a friction clutch 9 which when engaged connects the flywheel to the drive shaft 8 of the mechanism, the flywheel moment of inertia and initial speed being such that on clutch engagement the mechanism is accelerated to the specified speed as the flywheel decelerates to that speed. Preferably the moment of inertia of the flywheel and its driving means equals the moment of inertia of the mechanism and its motor, and the flywheel initial speed is twice the specified speed. The flywheel 6 is driven through a flexible coupling 2, 4, by a motor 1. The clutch plate 9 is keyed, with some axial freedom, to the shaft 8 and is engaged by the action of a fixed electromagnet 14 on an armature 13 of the clutch. In the clutch control circuit (Fig. 2, not shown) a low voltage D.C. supply charges a capacitor C through a high resistance R. Simultaneously with switching on the synchronous motor of the mechanism, a switch S is closed to discharge the capacitor through the coil 15 of the magnet 14 to engage the clutch. When the capacitor is discharged, the current in coil 15 falls until the clutch spring 11 is able to disengage the clutch, this being arranged to occur just after the mechanism has reached the specified speed.
