Abstract
727,720. Hydrogen peroxide in rocket motors. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. June 9, 1952 [June 27, 1951], No. 15308/51. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XII] In a jet reaction rocket motor hydrogen peroxide is fed under pressure through a catalyst and the resulting steam and oxygen pass into a combustion chamber, kerosene or a like fuel being passed into the latter chamber near the steam and oxygen so that combustion results. Hydrogen peroxide is fed via the inlet 24 and the spaces 16 and 18, where it acts as a coolant, to the orifices 23 and so to a catalyst chamber 13 where it is decomposed to give oxygen and steam which pass via the orifices 37 into the combustion chamber 11. Kerosene or a like fuel is passed via the inlet 36 and the passages 28 and 29 to the annular slits 17, 33 and 34, being ignited by the hot steam-oxygen mixture. The temperature of the oxygen-steam mixture may be raised by using a temporary baffle plate 38 which is ejected by the increased pressure when the fuel ignites.
