Abstract
724,447. Pistons. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. March 16, 1953, No 7252/53. Addition to 617,224. Class 122 (1). The piston of the parent Specification is provided with at least one passage H, for lubricating oil, extending from the trough A<SP>4</SP> to a point H<SP>1</SP> in the bore of each of the gudgeon pin bosses A<SP>3</SP> in which the gudgeon pin D<SP>2</SP> is free to rock, the point H<SP>1</SP> being substantially below the top of the upper half of the bore when the axis of the piston is vertical and the crown A<SP>1</SP> is uppermost; further, the bore of each of the bosses is provided with an oil distributing chamber H<SP>2</SP> having one or more distributing passages leading therefrom. The small-end bearing E of the connecting-rod E<SP>2</SP> is lubricated through holes E<SP>4</SP> and grooves E<SP>5</SP> arranged on the underside of the bearing as the lubricant is fed to the trough A<SP>4</SP> along a pipe F in the connecting-rod. Two passages H are preferably arranged to intersect the bore in each boss A<SP>3</SP> at diametrically-opposite points H<SP>1</SP> and continue through the boss to be plugged at their lower ends. As applied to a four-stroke engine, the grooves H<SP>2</SP>, H<SP>3</SP> preferably extend around the entire circumference of the gudgeon pin.
