Abstract
724,328. Fire grates. TUOHY, P. J. March 30,1953, No. 8728/53. Class 126 A fire grate having a recessed frame plate supported above an ash well below hearth level and a perforated or slotted fuel-supporting; grid movably supported at its side and rear edges in the recessed rear portion of the frame plate, as described in Specification 547,383, an imperforate breast integral with- or fixed to a draught plate having shutter-controlled openings and 'supported at its front and sides edges in the recessed front portion of the frame plate. A frame plate 2 is supported on stubs 2e above an ash well 3 of sheet steel provided with a reinforcing flange 3a. The back and rear of the sides of the frame 2 are curved upwardly, and slots 2g are provided in the back. A perforated grid 1, with a central raised dome 7, rests on ledges on the inner edges of the frame 2, and may be turned back about hinge stubs 1b to rest against the fireback with its rear edge above the top of the ash well. An imperforate breast 4, integral with or secured to a draught plate 5 rests on ledges on the front portion of the frame 2 with its ends adjoining the curved side parts of the frame. The slots 5a in the plate are controlled by a damper 6 provided with a handle shaped to engage a poker. The ash well 3 has vertical sides converging to the back, and the bottom curves gently from the front edge and rises sharply at the back. It may be cast in metal or concrete, or stamped out of sheet metal. An ash pan 8, of similar shape to, but of lighter gauge metal than the ash well, is reinforced by a wire round its rim and provided with a clip which may engage a poker for easy removal. The ash pan 8 rests on steps formed at the sides of the ash well 3 so as to allow space for the accumulation of spilled ash. The slots and perforations in the grid, frame and draught plate are splayed downwardly and horizontally revolving trivets may be provided at each end of the breast 4.
