UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM GOOD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DAM PER- PLATE AND REFLECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,946, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed January 6, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM G001), of the city and county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have made and invented a new and useful Improvementin Damper-Plates and Reflectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for application to and insertion in the throats or chimney-openings of grates and fire-places, for the purposes of preventing excessive draft and the escape and loss of heat from the fire, of curing back-drafts and the drawing down of smoke into the apartment, and of bringing the combustion of fuel in grates and fire-places under perfect control. It is particularly adapted for use in chimneys of defective construction.
The following description and the accompanying drawings clearly explain the construction and application of my improvement.
Figure l is a perspective view of my attachment. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line as w of Fig. 1, with the dampers removed. Fig. 8 is a sectional View of a fire-place, showing the application of my invention.
In Fig. 3, 00 represents the throat of achirnney, 3 its breast at the front of the outlet, and z the space wherein the grate is placed.
A is my improved plate and damper, which I place in the throat or opening between the breast and the back partof the chimney, so that the opening is entirely filled up and closed by it. This device consists of a metal plate, A, of a height and length to extend across the opening 00 both vertically and horizontally, and close it up. The top of the plate fits against the breast of the chimney, and its lower edge rests upon the back ledge, 10, of the chimney. In it is provided, also, an aperture, b, fitted with an adjustable damper, O. The bottom of the plate has legs or projections d d on the back, which are provided for supporting and steadying it, and at the top of the plateA is a ledge or projecting part, a, which extends forward horizontally, so as to rest against the chimney-breast. This horizontal extension is provided for the purpose of permitting the plate A to have a substantially perpendicular position when its bottom edge rests upon the forwardly-projecting part of the chimney-back, and for closing up the openingor space thatmay exist between the top of the plate A and the breast of the chimney.
For the application to and use in chimneys where the grate-space is deep and the chimney-throat is open this extension 6 will be nearly as broad as the plate A, so that it will entirely close the space that would otherwise be left between the top edge of the plate A and the breast 0c of the chimney.
1 provide in the horizontal extension 6 of the plate A an outlet, f, fitted with an adjustable damper, g, which I employ, in addition to the regular damper O, for the purpose of regulating the escape of heat and gases at the upper part of the grate-space, where they would otherwise be retained by that portion of the plate A and extension 0 above the principal outlet, 1).
The openings bf have on each side an ear, h, to receive and serve as a bearing for the pintles t of the dampers G 9, said ears or bearings for the pintles being open to permit the dampers O and g to be taken out, when re quired, for removal of the soot or other matter from the horizontal extension 0 or other portions of the attachment.
As thus constructed and applied the plate A forms a reflecting-surface to radiate and throw into the apartment the heat that ordinarily escapes directly up the chimney and is lost, while the damper provided in the plate aifords a ready and perfect means of regulatin g the draft and the consumption of fuel.
No change of grate or alteration of chimney is required in placing my improvement. It is easily regulated as required, and its action upon defective fines and imperfect draft is effective under all conditions. It is not attached to or secured permanently in place in the chimney, and can be readily taken out to clean the chimney or to replace it with a new one when injured or worn out.
Having thus fully described. my invention, 7 removable dampers G g, substantially as and what I claim and desire to secure by Letters for the purpose specified.
Patent, is- Witness my hand and sea].
