UNITED STATES] WILLIAM E. MCGARTY, OF ATHENS, GEORGIA.
HEATER.
. Application filed July 15, 1924. Serial No. 726,119.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM E. MCCARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the'county of Clarke and State of Georgia, haveinvented certain new and useful improvements in Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heaters for dwelling houses in which open grates can also be used to advantage; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed whereby the heater can be taken apart when desired and portions of it used in an open lire-place.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is afront view of a heater constructed according to this invention, with the front plate removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the heater, taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and showing the front plate in section. Fig. 3 is a front view of the frame and fire grate removed from the other parts of the heater.
A horizontal base (i is provided, and is mounted on legs 7. A frame formed of a back 8 and two sides 9 is stood loosely upon the base 6, and is open at the top and front. A rectangular chamber 10 is provided, and has a front 12 which is shorter than its back and sides. The back and sides are slidable over the upper part of the frame, and rest on a ledge or projection let on the frame. The back, front and sides of the chamber are preferably separate plates, and are secured together by lugs lo and bolts 16. The top of the chamber is closed by a cover 18 which fits over it, and the cover has an opening 19 and a flange 20 for the attachment of a stove pipe 21.
The front 12 of the chamber has two holes 22 formed in it, and a front plate 2 L is provided for closing the front part of the frame, leaving a draft space or opening 25 close over the base. The plate 2% has hooks 26 on its top edge, which engage with the holes 22, and suspend the front plate in place.
A grate 9.8 is secured inside the frame, anal is formed of any suitable arrangement of grate bars. The grate shown has horizontal bars at its front and upper part, and bottom bars 29 arranged transversely of the hori Zontal bars, and secured to the lowest of them and to the back of the frame.
When an open fire-grate can be used to advantage, the heater is taken apart, and the frame and grate as shown in Fig. 3 are stood in an open fire-place, and are used as an open grate.
Yi hat I claim is2- 1. A heater, comprising a horizontal base, a removable frame supported on the base and open at its top and front, a grate secured inside the said frame, a removable chamber supported by the said frame and provided with means for connecting it with a stove pipe, and a removable plate for partially closing the front of the frai'ne.
2. A heater, comprising a horizontal base, a removable frame resting on the base and open at its top and front, a grate secured inside the said frame, a removable chamber closing the top of the frame and provided with a stove pipe connection, and a removable plate suspended from the front of the said chamber in front of the said frame and forming a draft opening at its lower part below the grate.
3. A heater, comprising a horizontal base, a removable frame resting on the base and open at its top and front, a grate secured inside the said frame, a removable chamber supported by the said frame and provided with a removable cover and a stove pipe connection, the lower portions of the said chamber and frame being slidably connected together, and a removable plate partially closing the front of the frame.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
\VILLIAM E. MCCARTY.
