STOVE.
eeoeoa.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that 1, Annan OSCAR HAN- ooon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a speciication.'
This invention relates to stoves, and has for an object to provide a structure of this character which is capable of burning either wood or coal.
The particular object of the invention re sides in the provision of a base member which is constructed to form a permanent part of the structure and to provide a sheet metal drum lmember which is adapted for detachable engagement with the said permanent part of the structure thus providing` means whereby the said sheet metal part may be removed when worn or burned out and replaced at a minimum cost by a new part.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hopper having vertical apertured walls spaced from the walls of the drum to provide a chamber and to so arrange or associate the said hopper with respect to the lire pot that communication is established therebetween.
1n the drawings, forming` a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views 1-Figure 1 is a vertical secti'on through my improved stove. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the hopper. F ig. 4.- is a detail partial 4vertical section taken on the line /l-llof F ig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the lire pot. Fig. G is a detail plan view of the grate.
My improved stove as herein illustrated consists preferably of a base member 1 which is of oval form preferably in hori- Zontal section. This base member is prow vided with a bottom 2 on which is formed a series of suitably spaced ribs 3. The vertical wall of the said base member has formed therein anY opening fi which is closed by a door 5 of any suitable form. This door is preferably provided with a damper 6 which may be of any approved well known construction. An ash tray 7 is supported upon the ribs 3 of the bottom of the base member 1 and its construction permits it to be with- Specification of Letters Patent.

drawn from the stove by way of the door opening e. The base member 1, in practice, forms a permanent part of the structure and it is constructed preferably from cast-iron. The said base member is mounted on suitable supporting legs S, as shown.
The vertical wall of the base member 1 has formed thereon and upon its exterior surface a supporting` rib 9 which receives the lower edge portion of a sheet metal drum 10. This drum is provided with an opening 11 from which extends a short neck for receiving one end of a pipe connection 12 which is employed for the purpose of carrying off the waste products as is understood. The drum is also formed to provide an opening 13 which is closed normally by a cap 14k. This cap is interchangeable and may be engaged if desired with the flange which extends from the opening 11. The flanged portion which extends from the opening 13 in the drum may receive a heating flue of any approved construction and in this manner it will be understood that when the stove is in use a number of rooms may be heated through the provision of such iiue. The top of the drum is provided with a removable closure 15 in which is formed a suitable number of passages 16 which are adapted to be closed by the wings of a revolubly mounted damper 17.
The base member 1 is provided on its interior surface with a horizontally disposed flange 18 against which is seated the hori Zontally disposed flanged portion 19 of av fire pot 20. The sides of this tire pot, also the bottom are slotted, as shown, and the bars Q1 on the bottom of the pot are formed with centrally alining grooves 22 for receiving the shank portion 23 of a grate 241. This grate is provided with horizontally disposed agitating lingers 25 which are interposed between the bars 21 of the fire pot. One end of the shank Q3 of the grate extends through a portion of the base member 1 where it may be conveniently manipulated by any ap proved shaking element, not shown.
A hopper 2G is located in the drum and disposed immediately above the fire pot. This hopper also forms a permanent part of the stove and it is formed to provide an upper member consisting of a vertical wall 27 in which is formed a plurality of vertically disposed slots 28. The wall Q7 of the hopper is spaced from the walls of the drum to form a chamber 29. At the top of the wall 27 is the outwardly flared wall 30 of the hopper and at the bottom of the said chamber is disposed a similar wall 31 of the hopper. The last named wall is connected to the main body portion or wall 27 of the hopper by braces or legs 32 which are spaced from each other so that communication is established between the tire pot and the said chamber. The hopper 2G is provided with base portion 33 which is adapted to rest upon the flange l9 ol the lire pot. The base portion 33 and the wall 3l form the lower member of the hopper.
From the construction of the stove herein set forth and described it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that I employ as the main portion or base member a part which forms a permanent portion of the structure. The lire pot and the hop per described also form permanent parts of the structure. The drum l0 referred to and shown 'forms what may be termed a detachable and non-permanent part, this being desirable in View of the fact that the said drum will be made of sheet material which is desirable for the reason that in a wood burning stove it is essential to employ such metal that will heat readily and quickly. The drum lO and the base member l form in their entirety an inclosure or casing of a sectional structure and either of such parts may be replaced when worn by a new one at a minimum cost.
In operation of my improved stove, the hopper is filled or partly filled with coal and as it is burned upon the grate the heat through the provision of the dampers described will tend to accumulate in the chamber 29 to heat such portions of the drum which is disposed directly outwardly of the vertical walls of the hopper. In view of the formation of the slots or passages 2S in the hopper such small particles of coal that may tall through such passages will be deposited upon the chute-forming portion 3l of the hopper so that such particles will be conveyed to the lire pot and prevented from accumulating in the chamber 29. The heated products when the stove is burning will rise and be conveyed to the chamber by way of the passages which are formed between the legs 32.
The construction of the stove described and set forth in the foregoing is such that when it is desired to use it as a wood burner the drum can be first removed from the supporting base member, after which the firepot can be conveniently removed from the base member. The hopper is so constructed that it is spaced from the closure at the top of the drum to form a chamber. It will be understood that the heat products in their escape from the tire-pot will be temporarily confined in the chamber 29, and incident to the provision of the slots 28 in the hopper, the heat products will be i'ree to escape after partial utilization or expenditure of its energy to pass through such lire-pot where it will be discharged to the chamberpwhich, as described, is located between the top of the lire-pot and the closure for the drum.
I claim l. In a stove, the combination of a casing, a tire-pot, and grate suspended therein, and a hopper resting upon said fire-pot, said hopper comprising a base member and an upper member, legs connecting said members together in spaced relation to each other, each of said members being formed at its upper end with an outwardly flared wall forming between said upper member and said casing a chamber, the vertical walls of said upper member being formed with vertical slots throughout substantially its entire circumference, substantially as described.
2. In a stove, the combination of a casing, a lire-pot, and grate suspended therein, and a hopper resting upon said ire-pot and removable from the casing, said hopper comprising a base member and an upper member, legs connecting said members together in spaced relation to each other, each of said members being formed at its upper end with an outwardly flared wall forming between said upper member and said casing a chamber, the vertical walls of said ripper member being formed with vertical slots throughout substantially its entire circumference.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABRAM OSCAR HANCOCK.
