Unrrn SAMUEL A. JOHNSON, F TUSKEGEE, ALABAMA.
HEATING-STOVE.
.b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuskegee, in thecounty of Macon and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heating-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heating stoves, and has for an object to provide a stove with a fire box, and a dome disposed above the lire box and engaged therewith and provided at its upper end with a discharge passage for receiving the waste products of combustion and discharging them downwardly between the walls of the drum of the stove, thus utilizing in an effective manner the waste heat which is commonly discharged from the fire box upwardly in a direct vertical line into the usual stack or chimney.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :*--Figure 1 is a vertical section through the stove. Fig. 2 is a detail section showing the manner of connecting the head portions of the heat ducts. Fig. 3 :is a detail vertical section through a portion of the fire box and a portion of the dome showing the manner of connecting the two together. Fig. 1 is a rear elevation of the fire box, the dome, and the heat ducts showing the manner of connecting the said ducts to the discharge pipe. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail pers )ective view of one of the heat ducts. Fig. is a detail perspective view of the discharge pipe. Fig. 8 is a detail front elevation of a portion of the drum showing the fire door. Fig. 9 is a detail section taken on the line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a stove which comprises preferably a vertically disposed cylindrical drum 1 having a removable cap 2 at the upper end and provided with a closed bottom 3. The drum 1 carries a suitable form of grate 4 which is disposed in spaced relation to the bottom 3 so as to form he Specification of Letters Patent.

tween the bottom and the said grate an ashpit 5. drum 1 and has its walls disposed in spaced relation thereto, and as shown the lower end of said fire box is disposed immediately above the grate 4. The lire box has formed therein a fuel receiving opening 7 disposed in line with the fire door 8 carried by the drum 1. To prevent the products of com bustion escaping from the box 6 into the drum by way of the opening 7 I provide the box (3 with a rectangular flange 9 which entirely surrounds the opening 7 and is extended at its front end to the walls of the drum at the front of the latter. The box 6 is provided with an annular enlarge ment 10 at the upper end thereof which is rabbeted as shown at 11 to receive the lower end of a dome 12 provided at its upper end with a discharge passage 13. I preferably secure the dome to the fire box 6 by means of rivets 14 but it is obvious that any other suitable fastening means can be employed.
Ileat receiving ducts 15 and 16 are employed and each consists preferably of a downwardly extending leg 17 of concavoconvex form adapted to lie at the sides of the dome 12 and to be secured thereto by engaging the flanges 18 and with the said dome suitable fastening devices 19. The said heat ducts are provided with right angularly extending upper end portions or heads 20 which are disposed immediately above the discharge passage 13 and in spaced relation thereto. At the lower ends of the legs 17 extend arcuate horizontal portions 21 of concave-convex form, and these portions are arranged to con'nnunicate with each other so as to establish communication between both ducts at the sides of the dome. The portions 21 extend partly around the dome and are each provided with a passage 22. A discharge pipe 23 is provided and carries at its lower end a horizontal portion 24 having right angularly extending end portions 25 to fit in the passage 29. formed in the said portions 21. of the heat ducts. Adjacent to the upper end of the drum and at a point slightly below the upper extremities of the heat ducts is formed a plurality of slots 26 to more effectively permit the es cape of heat from the drum. These slots are preferablyarranged in an annular series, but it is obvious that they can be arranged in a manner that will best suit the requirement. The drum 1 is provided adjacent to A fire box 6 is located within the the lower end thereof with a suitable foot rail 27. The discharge pipe 23 is disposed partly within the drum 1 and at its upper extremity extends through a passage 27 .ormed in the drum and is connected to a pipe or chimney 28.
In operation, fuel is fed into the fire box as is customary in stoves of the character similar to the one herein described, and as the products of combustion and smoke rise from the fire they will travel upwardly in the direction of the arrows indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings and discharged from the passage 13 into the ducts 15 and 16. The products of combustion and smoke will then take a downward. course then an annular course by its travel through the portions 21 and then finally discharged into the pipe 23.
I claim A stove comprising a casing, a fire-pot located therein and having its walls spaced from the walls of the casing, a grate located above the bottom of the casing and closing the bottom of the fire-pot, a substantially dome-like member extending upwardly from the fire-pot and provided with an upper open end portion, the said casing having passages formed therein near its top and substantially on a line with the upper open end of the dome, ducts secured to the dome 30 and extending upwardly thereon from the bottom of the dome and having interlocking cap-forming portions at the top of the dome and in spaced relation to the upper open end. thereof, the said ducts having horizontal lower portions extending partly around the dome and each formed adjacent to its end with an opening and a discharge pipe extending upwardly from the said horizontal portions of the ducts and formed at its lower end with a horizontal portion having its end portions fitting the passages in the said horizontal portions of the ducts, the said discharge pipe having its upper end extending through the casing at a point immediately above the passages therein.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
