ALFRED MANSFIELD, orvIoro'arA, BBI'IISHCOLUMEIA, CANADA? FUEL-SAVING DEVICE FOR'DOIflESTIC'STOVES ANDi BANGES.-"
Application filed September 15, .1925. Serial Il\To. i
To all whom it maj 'concer-n:
Be it known that I, ALFRED MANsFInLo, of the city of Victoria, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel- Saving Devices for Domestic Stoves and Ranges, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fuel saving devices for cooking stoves and ranges, in which a temporary modification of the fire-box or fire space is made in order to effect conservation of fueL- Fuel savers of the type in question hitherto in use have taken the form of a removable firegrate practically covering the entire bottom surface'of the fire-box but raised above it so as to reduce the capacity of the fire space; this device whilst reducing the fire space has the disadvantage that the fuel is dissipated over the entire length of the firebox, and when the full capacity of the firebox is required this device must first'be removed, also other obvious disadvantages which in my invention are entirely eliminated.
The primary purpose of my invention is to provide an improved fuel saving device of the type adapted to be inserted in the fire box of an ordinary cooking stove or range when it is desired to effect a temporary reduction in the capacity of'the fire box for the purpose of conserving fuel.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct the fuel saver, that the same will occupy only a predetermined area of the fire box when inserted therein, so that the capacity of the fire box may be increased without removing the fuel saver simply by introducing additional fuel into the unoccupied portion of the fire box.
Other objects and advantages of the invention, as well as the particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts will be more readily understood from the following description and accompanying drawings;
In the drawing, the single figure is a front perspective view of the improved fuel saver positioned within the fire box of an ordinary cooking stove or range, the latter being shown in dotted outline.
Referring more'particularly to the drawings, 5 and 6 designate respectively a pair of upright end plates of unequal height resting at their lower edges on the bottom of the firefbox li -and spaced apart a"distarice a proxim ating one-half the lengt h of the" firbox, These plates support between them a horizontally disposed perforated grate or plate 7, which is preferably supported above 1 the bottom of the fire box adistance approximating substantially one-half the height of the latter so that, in the use of thisdevice, the fuel capacity provided will be equal to approximately one-fourth of the normal fuel capacity of the fire box, it being understood that the fuel is supportedon the plate 7 and retained thereon by the upwardly projecting portion of plate 5 in cooperation. with the sides and opposing end wall of the fire box.
The plates 5, 6 and 7 are constructed to extend the full width of the fire box A, but it will be notedthat the plate 5 is made substantially higher than the plate 6, so as to extend from the top to the bottom of the fire box and thus constitute a battle positioned substantially intermediate the length of the fire box. In constructing the device, it will be understood that the plates 5, 6 and 7 may be cast in one piece or formed separately. and assembled in any desired manner. In the present instance, it will be noted that one end of the plate 7 is flanged and secured to the plate 5 intermediate the upper and lower edges of the latter, the remaining end of the plate 7 being secured to the upper edge of the shorter end plate 6 and this latter end plate may, if desired, be perforated in any suitable manner for purpose of lightness and conservation of material.
In practice, it will be understood that the 7 device is inserted in the fire box as disclosed in Fig. 1 with the end plate 6 lying against one end of the fire box and the remaining end plate 5 lying substantially at a point intermediate the length of the fire box. The I fuel is then placed on the plate 7 and is supportedby the latter sufficiently close to the top of the fire box to afford maximum heating effect. In the event that a material increase in the capacity of the fire box is required, while the fuel saving device is positioned therein, this can be readily effected by introducing fuel into that portion of the fire box which is unoccupied by the fuel saving,
device and without necessitating removal of the latter.
By forming the plate 5 to provide a baflle extending the full width and height of the fire box A, a strong draft will be created through that portion of the bottom of that fire box directly underlying the perforated plate 7 to effect complete combustion of the fuel.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent, is
A fuel saver for insertion in a fire box, comprising a pair of end plates adapted to rest at their lower edges on the bottom of the fire box at one end of the latter, said 10 plates being of unequal height and spaced apart a distance approximating one-half the length of the fire box, a perforated body plate secured at one end upon the upper edge of the shorter of the end plates and at the opposite ends to the intermediate portion of the remaining end plate, the last mentioned end plate, being of sufficient height to extend from the bottom to the top of the fire box.
