The major fire box is formed with a cir- To all whom it may concern.
cular portion having a gap and an elongated Be it known that 1, JOHN STAUFFER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at portion, the wall 7 of the circular portion North Manchester, in the county of l Jabash and the wall 8 of the elongated portion each flaring outwardly and upwardly from the base, the rectangular wall being continuous with the circular wall and the outer end portion of the rectangular wall being arched or bowed outwardly. project inwardly from the top of the wall 8 near its junction with the wall 7 and two lugs 10 project inwardly from the lower portion of the wall 8 or the wall 7 near the said junction of said walls, the lugs 10 being further removed from the arched end of the wall 8 than the lugs 9, in order to support in upright position the plate 11 having the curvature of the circular wall and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fjtoves, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to stoves and is particularly directed to improvements in the fire pots of heating stoves, such as laundry stoves.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and economically constructed device which shall be capable of burning economically and efficiently either coal or wood, the transformation from one type to the other being readily accomplished.
in all wood burning stoves it is desirable that the fire pot shall be of a length to accommodate at least stove wood of usual length. Coal, however, is not economically burned in an elongated or rectangular fire box or pet, a circular fire pot being much more etficient in burning coal than the rectangular pot which is adapted for ordinary stove wood. Hence the principal object and advantage of my invention is the provision in a stove of a fire pot of such novel construction that by the use of a converter which is removably supported therein the pot may be transformed from a wood burning fire box to a coal burning pot, and vice versa by removing the converter.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings, in
which- I Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the stove; Fig. 2 an end elevational view of the stove; Fig. 3 a plan view of the same; Fig. ra plan view of the fire pot with the converter removed; Fig. 5 a similar plan view of the fire pot with the converter in po sition to convert the fire box into a coal burning pot; Fig. 6 a plan view of the at tachment; Fig. 7 a front elevational view of the converter, and Fig. 8 a side elevational view of the converter.
In the drawings, the base 1 of the stove is supported in suitable manner as by the legs 2. The base is of sufficient depth to re ceive an ash pan 3 which may be withdrawn through the door a. The fire pot 5 rests on and is cemented to the rim of the base, any desirable form of grate 6 being supported at the lower end or bottom of the pot.
grate with its side edges in contact with the side walls of the fire pot at the proper point to cause the concave face of the plate to be continuous with the inner face of the wall 7, and thereby form a circular pot.
In order that the draft shall pass entirely though the circular portion of the fire box, when the partition or plate 11 is installed, I attach a shutter or damper 12 to the lower sine of the plate 11, which, when the plate is installed in proper position will overlie or rest on the rectangular portion of the grate and thus close off all draft through the said portion.
The top 13 is suitably secured to the upper edge of the fire pot, a smoke pipe con-- nection 1d being formed. on the top at one end thereof, and a door 15 being provided at the opposite end. A suitable number of lids 16 are also provided in the portion 13 of the top removably supported therein.
ii hen wood is used as a fuel, the plate 11 with its shutter or damper 12 is removed from the fire pot and the fuel may be laid on the grate, the draft to the stack or pipe attached to the connection 1 L being through the entire grate and the fuel thereon. The top plate 13f that carries the lids 16 is readily removable from the top 13 so that the plate 11 and its shutter 12 are easily removed or inserted. Should it be desired to burn coal in the stove, the plate 11 and its shutter, or damper, are inserted and the draft is then through the circular portion of the fire pot and the fuel therein. The plate 11 forms a partition that completes Two lugs r 7, the plate being adapted to rest on the the circular fire-pot and supports the fuel therein against falling into the elongated portion of the fire pot.
What I claim is:
A major fire box comprising in one portion a body circular in horizontal section having a gap and in the other portion of an elongated body, in combination With a seglnent adapted to removably fill in the said gap and having an extension adapted to 10 fit Within the elongated portion of the body.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto sub scribed my name this'29tl1 day of October 1923.
JOHN STAUFFER.
