COMBINATION FURNACE AND COOK-STOVE.
Application filed February 12, 1920.
To all/10720722 itmag concern:
Be it known that I, Bnnrrm H. W'navnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Furnaces and Cook-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
'l. he object of the invention is to provide a domestic heating apparatus especially adapted to burn charcoal and designed for use in connection with laundrying operations and also as a cook stove and baker, and wherein a conservation and concentration of heat is secured as a means of economizing fuel while securing the maximum eiliciency thereof.
Vith these and related objects in view the invention consists in a construction, combination and relation of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus.
Fm. 2 1s a vertical sectional new of the b same.
rig. u is a top plan view. Fig. at 1s a horizontal sectlona-l view on the plane indicated by the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The body or casing of the apparatus which obviously may be made in a. variety of forms or shapes, is constructed of furnace clay as indicated at inclosed in an exterior oasing 11 of sheet metal such as tin, zinc or the like, said furnace clay having the property of connnuni -ati11g the heat from the fuel in the fire box indicated at 12 to the other compartments of the structure such as the oven 13, without material loss, and without objectionable radiation, to the end that an economy in the use of fuel, preferably charcoal, is secured. The fire box or fuel chamber 12 is separated from a Subjacent ashpit 14 by means of a. horizontal partition 15 provided with openings 16 to provide in effect a grate of the same material as that employed in forming the body portion of the walls of the structure, to wit: furnace clay or fire clay, and the ashpit in turn is separated from the oven 13 by a similar partition wall 17 of the same material, access being afforded to the ashpit through a door 18, referably hinged as at 19 and having a suitable latch 20 and pro- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Serial No. 358,308.
vided with ventilating or draft openings 21 controlled. by a register 22. In the same way the necessary access to the oven, which may be used for baking purposes either inde pendently or While the apparatus is employed for heating smoothing or sad irons, is provided for by a hinged door 23 also having a suitable latch 24; and a register 25 which may be used to regulate or modify the internal heat or allow inspection of the contents of the oven without opening the door.
Surmounting the body portion of the stove as above described, and which may be regarded as the main or body member thereof, is a supplemental member or superstructure 26 ha ing a cover plate 27 preferably fitted with a removable lid 28 and suitable legs or standards 29 resting upon studs or supports 30 rising from the upper edges of the walls of the main member and secured thereto by sleeve couplings 81, preferably interiorly threaded to engage corresponding threads on said legs 29 and studs 30 so as to insure the permanence of the superstructure when employed in connection with the main or body member of the device.
The supplemental member of the apparatus which as will be seen from the above description is removable from the main member, is provided with end and side Walls or aprons 32 and 33 depending from the horizontal top plate 27 but terminating short of the plane of the upper edge of the main or body member to give lateral access in all directions to the interior of the fire box, so that when the top of the supplemental member is being used, for example, for cooking purposes, the fire box may be used in connection with the heating of smoothing or sad irons, and, obviously, the oven may at the same time be used for baking purposes. The aprons depending from the plane of the top or cover plate of the removable supplemental member of the device serve to concentrate the heat rising from the burning fuel in the fire box to maintain a proper temperature of said top plate, and the latter as well as the walls or aprons 32 and 33 may have an inner lining of furnace or fire clay as indicated in dotted lines at 34c in Fig. 2.
W'Vhat is claimed is:
n heating apparatus having a main member provided at its top with an open topped fire box, a supplemental member removably seated upon the main member, said supplemental member being provided with depending legs or supports and the main member being provided with upstanding studs upon which said legs or supports are seated, sleeve couplings deteehebly engaging said studs and legs or supports to secure the supplemental member in spanning relation with the open top of the fire box, and said supplemental member having a top plate provided with a, removable lid, and depend- 10 m end and side aprons terminating short of the plane of the top of the main member. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
