In a fastener assorting mechanism particularly for a shoe upper conforming machine in which at each operation the lowest fasteners are taken from raceways by a separator bar and are fed to a fastener-driving mechanism by pneumatic means, the separator bar is mounted so as to be movable away from the ends of the raceways. The separator bar 42 is mounted on end plates 84 pivotally connected to arms 72 mounted on shafts 38, 40 which are rocked by a rack 48 and pinions 54 so as to move the separator bar to and fro between the raceways 12 and an air-line block 44 by which the separated fasteners are conveyed to delivery tubes 110. To prevent fasteners from falling out of the raceways when the bar 42 is removed therefrom, there is provided a resilient pad 116 carried by a bar 118 which is pivoted on the raceway cover 20 and controlled by a spring 128 and a cam 130 on the shaft 38. In order that the bar 42 may be held against the raceways until the pad 116 is moved downwards to engage the end fastener, one upper arm 72 is held against immediate movement by a spring- pressed pivoted latch 50 which is tripped by a stop 100 on the rack 48, clipping of the arms 72 on the shafts 38, 40 being permitted by frictional connections comprising springs 76 and washers 74.
