Abstract
723,944. Change-speed belt gearing. METCALFE, T. July 29, 1953 [Sept. 1, 1952; Jan. 23, 1953], Nos. 21914/52 and 1984/53. Class 80 (2). In a change-speed belt drive with a stepped driven pulley i above a wide cylindrical driving pulley a, the latter is rigid with the shaft of a motor b carried by a platform c pivoted at d and raised or lowered automatically as the belt m is moved on to a larger or smaller step, so as to maintain constant tension in the belt, by a vertical rod e which has a bracket f engaging a roller g under the platform c and which carries a roller s engaging an inclined edge r of the belt shifter bar j. The latter is moved longitudinally by a pinion o meshing with rack teeth n and rigid with a boss p carrying spring-loaded pivoted actuating handles q. A fixed stop u, which may be chamfered on one side, co-operates with the handles q to lock the boss p in adjusted position, so that the engaged handle must be pulled forward to release it for rotation. The weight of the motor band platform c may be partially counter-balanced by a weight h.
