Abstract

290,138. Bedford, C. S. Dec. 31, 1927. Reversing - gearing comprises sliding-clutch mechanism automatically operated by a pivoted lever actuated by a tape or cord carried between winding-barrels. Rollers are driven from shafts 8 provided at their front end with bevel wheels 10 and spur wheels 14. The wheels 14 mesh with similar wheels 15 fixed to winding barrels 16. The wheels 10 mesh with pinions 11 on a transverse driving shaft 12. The rollers are thus turned in one directon or the other according as one or the other pinion 11 is clutched to the shaft 12, a sleeve 23 sliding on the shaft 12 carrying a dog-clutch at either end for this purpose. The sleeve is moved to-and-fro at the desired times by a pivoted lever 19, the lower arm of which is formed with an eye to receive a cord or tape, which is passed from one barrel 16 to the other. Buttons on the tape engage the lever to initiate the reversing operation. The upper end of the lever is formed with an arcuate slot which guides a rolling weight 27.
