[Class 142 (iv).] In spool winders for winding several yarns 19 on to a single spool 20 for use with the tube frames of Axminster looms, and of the type in which three parallel rollers, 2, 3, 6, all driven in the same direction, fit between the heads of the spool the upper roller is pressed downwards on the spool by means of weights 16 on levers 14 connected by lever mechanism 15, 172, 18 to the lower portions of the uprights 7, 8 the upper pivoted portions of which carry the roller 6. These upper portions are joined by a rod 55. The lower portions are guided in guideways in the fixed frames which carry the bearings of the lower rollers 2, 3. Racks on these uprights engage pinions 88 on a shaft which is rotatable by a chain and sprocket and handle 11 to raise the upper roller 6 away from a filled spool. The upper hinged parts of the uprights can then be swung out against the action of springs 9, 10 to facilitate removal of the spool. The rollers are driven through chains controlled by a handle 27 by moving which gears on the left and gears 43, 44 on a sleeve 39 splined on a shaft 38 driven through universal joint gearings 35, 36, 37 are simultaneously moved to one or the other of two positions. In one position wherein the machine is adjusted to produce overwound spools as shown in Fig. 3, the rollers 2, 3 are driven at one speed and the roller 6 at a lower speed. In the other position shown in Fig. 6, used when underwound spools are to be produced, the rollers 2, 6 are driven at one speed, and the roller 3 at a slower speed, the yarns in both cases first contacting with the slower moving roller. The upper roller 6 is driven by means of a sprocket chain 52, which is sufficiently long to permit of the required upward movement of the roller, the slack in the chain being taken up by rollers 54c on hinged parts 54a, 54b drawn together by a spring 54d. The rollers press on the sides of the chain.
