Abstract

948,151. Cutting apparatus. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. July 12, 1960 [July 28, 1959], No. 25806/59. Heading B4B. Apparatus for cutting strips, preferably on the bias, from a length of fabric comprises an intermittently-driven conveyer 1, Fig. 1, for carrying the fabric, a rotatable knife 21 mounted on a transverse framework 1a and movable across the conveyer to cut a strip from the fabric, means comprising a shaft 28 and levers 30, 31, Figs. 2 and 4, connected to the knife and to an endless driving chain 25 for lowering and raising the knife to and from the cutting position at the ends of the return and cutting strokes, and harmonic motion output gear mechanism 33, Fig. 1, of the kind described in Specification 720,368 drivably connected to chain sprocket 26 for moving the knife across the conveyer from a stationary knife position on one side of the conveyer with gradually increasing velocity during part of the cutting stroke of the knife, the knife velocity being gradually reduced to a stationary knife position on the other side of the conveyer. The knife is mounted on a pivotable arm 22 and is driven from the shaft of an electric motor 20 mounted on a carrier 18 movable on rails 3 forming part of the framework 1a. The knife is held in either its cutting or retracted position by means of a locking device 35, Fig. 2, which comprises a spring-influenced locking peg 36 engageable in one or other of two sockets provided in a member 39 attached to the knife arm 22, the peg being engageable by one end of a pivotallymounted lever 40 the other of which carries a roller 41 engageable with guide rails 42 to 44 provided with inclined end surfaces 45 to 48. The framework 1a is supported on a trolley 7, Fig. 1, which is longitudinally adjustable by means of motor-driven pinions 13 engaging racks 15 and the framework has secured thereto a turntable 4 which is angularly adjustable by means of a motor-driven pinion 9 engaging a toothed quadrant 8.
