Abstract

1,200,728. Cutting device. DAVID BRIDGE & CO. Ltd. 4 Dec., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 53965/66. Heading B4B. In a cutting device comprising a carriage 52 on which is mounted a circular knife 26 which can cut a strip 10 of material, e.g. unvulcanized rubber, when the carriage is traversed by power means relative to the strip, the strip is supported on both sides of the knife. There is provided a rolling drive means arranged between a rotatable shaft 74 to which the knife is coupled and a non-traversing rail so that as a result of the carriage being traversed relative to the rail, the knife is rotated at a peripheral speed greater than the speed of traverse of the carriage and the knife. The rolling drive means may comprise a toothed pinion 85 which is connected to the shaft 74 and runs along a non-traversing rack 88. The pinion 84 is coupled to the knife by means of a chain 92. Alternately the rack and pinion may be replaced by a chain and sprocket or by a rail against which a roller bears so as to be driven by friction. The carriage incorporates pairs of rollers 82, 86 which bear against the upper and lower surfaces of a beam 42. The carriage is connected to a chain 56 mounted on sprockets 58 one of which is driven by a flexible electric motor 60. The carriage co-operates at the ends of its travel with two stopping at reverse switches 68. The cutting device may include conveyer rollers 16 supporting plates 22 which define a knife gap 24. Alternatively these members may be replaced by a flexible endless belt conveyer with a cover of soft material, e.g. rubber forming an anvil, the upper run being supported by a backing. In another arrangement, alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), the carriage is driven by a pneumatic piston and cylinder device (100) connected directly or indirectly to the carriage.
