Abstract

772,210. Dental engines. HAINAULT, M. May 12, 1955 [Oct. 20, 1954], No. 13794/55. Class 81(2) [Also in Group XXIV] A device for driving a surgical drill or saw, &c., comprises a sealed housing, containing an electric motor C and gearing providing direct drive and two step-down ratios, whereby the whole apparatus may be externally sterilized. The ratios are selected by sliding a rod H carrying a fork G which engages an axially slidable hub 5 on a driven shaft F. In the uppermost position of the hub 5. a set of dogs 6 on the shaft 3 of the motor C is engaged by dogs 7 on the end of the hub. Direct drive is then transmitted through a slot 15 in the hub and a pin L to the driven shaft F. and through a pin 14 and slot 13 to an output connector 18. When the hub 5 is moved to a central position, the dogs 6, 7 disengage and the hub is driven at a reduced ratio from a pinion D on the motor spindle through gears E, E 1 on a layshaft and a pinion K engaging the latter. The hub continues to drive the output shaft through the pin L, &c. In the lowermost position of the hub 5 it is free on the shaft F, since the pin L passes into a continuous recess R, and it is still driven through gears D, E, E 1 , K. However, a pinion O formed on the lower end of the hub 5 now engages the planet pinions M of a planetary gear assembly having a fixed annulus N. The planet carrier P is simultaneously pressed downwards by the hub 5 to engage dogs 9 thereon with dogs 10 mounted on the driven shaft F to give a still further reduced ratio.
