Abstract

723,707. Hulls. ALDOUS SUCCESSORS, Ltd. Aug. 20, 1953 [Sept. 12, 1952], No. 23000/52. Class 113 (2). In a vessel having a tunnel 3 terminating at least partly above the water line 10 adjacent the stern of the vessel and within which is mounted a propeller 6, a closure member 8 pivotally connected at 9 in a recess 2 formed outside the tunnel in the transom 1 is arranged substantially to prevent air being admitted to the tunnel through the after end thereof when the vessel is going astern. Members 11 and 12 form a continuation of the tunnel wall and a three-sided "box" seating for the closure member. When the vessel is going astern the closure member 8 is urged on to the seating 11, 12, air tightness being maintained by a resilient sealing member between the closure member and the seating, while when going ahead the water flow through the tunnel acts to lift the closure member automatically.
