Abstract
1362694 Steering ships SAMUEL WHITE & CO Ltd 2 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 14635/71 Heading B7V A ship retarding system includes means defining a forward facing mouth for receiving water into a duct and a discharge director flush with the hull bottom, the director leading from the duct and capable of directing discharge of the water forwardly of the ship. In a preferred embodiment the duct 13 contains a pump 15, driven by engine 18 through gear-box 17 and shaft 16, and a discharge director 22 having guide vanes 24 and rotatable by steering gear 26 through shaft 25, according to the required direction of discharge. The duct 13 is connected with two mouths 31 defined by ducts, Fig. 3, which are movable by hydraulic rams 34 to an inboard or outboard position. The mouths 31 have vertical or horizontal bars 38, 39. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the mouth comprises an opening in the forward facing portion of the bows and includes a butterfly type valve for opening or closing the duct.
