In a compression refrigerating system, liquid refrigerantflows in series through a high temperature evaporator 3, a pressure differential valve 12, a reservoir 6 and a low temperature evaporator 4, the outlet of which is connected to a separator 7 from which leads the suction pipe 9, the partition 8 between the reservoir and the separator being provided with an aperture 14 closed by a check valve 15 when a high pressure exists in the reservoir during operation of the compressor, the check valve opening when the compressor stops to allow liquid refrigerant to drain from the separator to the reservoir. In a modification of the reservoir-separator, Fig. 2, the liquid refrigerant flows to the reservoir through a small orifice 25 in the partition 24, displaced vapour passing to the separator through a narrow pipe 26.
