Abstract

Class 29 In a compression system having between the compressor 2 and the condenser 12 an oil separator 24 from which oil is returned to the compressor through a pipe 8, an orifice 84 is provided in pipe 8 of such size as to readily pass oil but, in the absence of oil, as to prevent any substantial flow of refrigerant'gas due to a "pressure shock" condition. The Specification quotes particular sizes of orifice for different capacities of plant. As shown, mixed oil and gas flow into the separator through peripheral apertures 42 in a closed ended cylinder and then through a screen 36. They then flow through a nozzle 48 in a transverse wall 44 and impinge on a cupshaped member 54 carried by an arm 56 pivoted at 60. Movement of the arm 56 opens valve 75 in series with the orifice 84 and any oil flows through the valve, a screen 92 and orifice 84 to the compressor. If no oil be present, no substantial gas flow occurs through the orifice. Refrigerant gas flows through a further screen 93 before entering the condenser. Transverse wall 44 may have auxiliary apertures 50, 52. Arm 56 may be pivoted about a vertical axis and biased towards nozzle 48 by a spring. The separator also acts as a muffler for compressor noise.
