Abstract
1,216,765. Refrigerating. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP. 16 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 17944/68. Heading F4H. A compression-condensation system includes a vapour circuit and a liquid circuit which are each adjustable to vary the quality of the refrigerant in the evaporator and the refrigerant mass flow rate in the evaporator. As illustrated, a main circuit comprises the compressor 1, condenser 2, expansion valve 3, and evaporator 4. The evaporator is provided with a mixing chamber 8 and a separator 5 which are linked by a vapour line 15 and a liquid line 14 to form, with the evaporator, the vapour and liquid circuits. Pumps 6 and 7 are included and the flow rates in the lines 14 and 15 are adjustable. In a modification, Fig. 3b (not shown), the liquid circuit powers a jet pump to cause flow in the vapour circuit. The jet pump and/or a valve in the vapour circuit are adjustable. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3c (not shown), the jet pump may be powered by the vapour flow to cause flow in the liquid circuit. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), high pressure vapour from a point upstream of the condenser powers a jet pump and then passes to the evaporator mixing chamber. The jet pump draws liquid from the separator to the mixing chamber. In this case the vapour circuit is formed by the evaporator, separator, compressor, jet-pump and mixing chamber. In a further arrangement (not shown), refrigerant flows from the expansion valve direct to the separator and the mixing chamber is fed only by the liquid and vapour lines from the separator.
