Abstract

722,432. Fire grates. HIGHAM, E. B., WESTBROOK, T. C. L., and STEUERMAN, M. May 22, 1953 [Feb. 24, 1952], No. 2013/52. Class 126 A fire grate comprises a monolithic fire bowl of refractory material adapted to fit into a fireplace and having an aperture in front of the firebowl and a closure to regulate access of air through the aperture. The metal part 3 of the fireplace is provided with lugs 4, Fig. 2, engaging sockets 5 formed in the metal casing 2 within which the refractory firebowl 1 is cast. The back and sides of the fire bowl 1, Fig. 3, slope outwardly in both directions from the level of the grate proper 15. The grate is supported by legs 16 at the back and a member 20 engaging a ledge 19 projecting from the rear of the fireplace front 3. Extensions 17 of the grate project above the front 3 to enable the grate to be agitated. An opening in the grate front is closed by a member 7 provided with toothed quadrants 8, Fig. 4, to hold it in a selected position. A projection 10 at the upper edge of each quadrant co-operates with a sloping surface formed on the fire front 3 and a sloping surface is formed at the bottom of the aperture so that the member 7 is drawn tightly against the fire front in the closed position.
