Abstract

722,299. Reciprocating pumps. EICHENAUER, R. Oct. 22, 1952. [July 31, 1952] No 26516/52. Class 102 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a liquid spraying device a piston 46b is vibrated by an electromagnet in a cylinder having an inlet opening 53 controlled by the piston and an outlet closed by a non-return valve 57a, through which liquid is discharged to a pressure chamber 63a closed by a disc forming part of the spray nozzle assembly (see Group XXIX) which includes a centrally apertured hollow cap 15. The piston 46b is returned by a spring 8 and actuated on its forward or delivery stroke by an armature 13 of a magnet 32 supplied through a cable 88a with current controlled by a switch 40 in the grip handle 66. The armature oscillation is controlled by a compression spring 30 located between a clip 12 secured to the armature and a regulating screw 36, there being just sufficient clearance between the end of the bore 30a housing the spring 30 and the clip 12 to allow the armature to oscillate. The spring 8 is compressed between the pump cylinder and a nut 104 which is secured to the free end of the piston 46b and abuts a plate 79 held in the clip 12. The device is screwed on to the cover 27 of a container 26 from which liquid is drawn via an inlet pipe 59 by the pump and discharged to the nozzle, liquid leaking back along the piston being returned to the container by way of a lateral bore 101 and a recess 102 in the pump cylinder body and a slot 103 at the gland end of the cylinder that communicates with the pipe 29 by a passage 29b. In a modification (Fig. 4) the pump body 47 is arranged at the bottom of the container 26, liquid being positively supplied by gravity to the pump inlet 53a and discharged through a pipe 25 to the nozzle, the pressure in the pipe 25 being relieved as necessary by a ball valve 5 loaded by a spring 6 controlled by a regulating screw 36a, by-passed liquid being returned to the container through a passage 29b and the return pipe 29. In a further modification, in which the piston actuates two parallel plungers reciprocating in their respective cylinders, the pump and its activating mechanism are housed in a structure that floats on the liquid to be sprayed and the nozzle, delivery pressure relief valve, electric control switch, and handle form a separate integer connected to the pump housing by flexible conduits.
