Abstract

1,126,751. Reciprocating pumps. AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS, Inc. Oct. 15, 1965, No.43835/65. Heading F1A. In a pump for highly volatile liquids, e.g. liquefied gases or super-heated water, one or more pump units 24a-c, Fig. 1, and ( Fig. 2 not shown), are mounted in an insulated chamber, each pump unit comprising a reciprocating piston 40, Fig. 7, which acts to open an inlet valve 62 at the beginning of the suction stroke by interengagement of spring fingers 67 on the valve head with a cavity 71 in the piston head. Clearance in cavity 71 provides lost motion during the initial movement of piston 40. When valve 62 is fully open, valve spring abutment 66 engages the cylinder head and the continued movement of piston 40 disengages it from valve 62. On the delivery stroke, delivery valves 77 open and valve 62 closes, piston 40 re-engaging the inlet valve at the end of the delivery stroke. Casing 45 surrounding the pump acts as a suction reservoir, and is surrounded by the insulated chamber, into which vaporized liquid is vented from the pump circuit, and through which coolant gas may be circulated.
