The fuel pump of an internal combustion engined vehicle and the odometer or a road wheel of the vehicle are connected respectively to two inputs of a differential gear, at least one of the connections including a variable-speed drive which is adjusted according to the rotation of an output element of the differential gear so as to balance the two inputs, and the angular position of the output element, which corresponds to the fuel consumption with respect to the distance travelled, is indicated. Cones 21, 22 having hard rubber peripheries, are driven respectively by the fuel pump and odometer and are engaged by bronze wheels 35, 36 which drive rubber rollers 34, 37 geared to the crown wheels 24, 25 of a differential gear mounted with the rollers and bronze wheels in a frame 33. The planet-wheel carrier 27 of the differential gear is fast with a shaft 28 which has a threaded portion engaged in a fixed nut 41 and a splined portion which rotates a shaft 42 geared to a pointer 44. If the wheels 35, 36 are driven at different rates, the shaft 28 is rotated and consequently moves with the frame 33 longitudinally, thus altering the drive ratios to the wheels 35, 36 until a position is reached where the wheels 35, 36 are rotating at the same rate. This position corresponds with the ratio of the rates of rotation of the cones 21, 22 and is indicated by the pointer 44 which co-operates with a scale showing the existing miles-pergallon ratio. The wheel 35 may be arranged to slip at either end of the cone 21 to prevent damage when the vehicle is coasting or stationary. The cone 21 may be driven through an electric coupling.
