721,726. Speed governors. ULTRA ELECTRIC, Ltd. Jan. 13, 1954 [Oct. 21, 1952], No. 26443/52. Class 57. A speed governor comprises an impeller b immersed in mercury and driven by the engine or other apparatus to be controlled and creating by virtue of its rotation a pressure which is applied to a diaphragm g capable of moving against the force of a carbon-steel spring i and connected to a rod h for transmitting its movement to the speed-regulating arrangements of the engine or other apparatus, for example a throttle valve. Changes in temperature do not affect the governor since the change in the density of mercury is very closely compensated by the change in spring rate. The impeller b, which is provided with an axial hole e and radial holes d, is mounted in a casing a connected by pressure and suction pipes j, k, to a second casing f containing the diaphragm g. The governor may be used to control a gas turbine.
