769,887. Centrifugal governors. SUNDSTRAND MACHINE TOOL CO. June 22, 1955 [July 26, 1954], No. 18062/55. Class 57. A governor for controlling the speed of a device to be operated at a predetermined speed through a wide temperature range comprises a casing 1 with inlet and outlet passages connected respectively to a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure and to a speed-varying mechanism, a control member, such as a valve 9, for controlling the passages, flyweights 6 rotatably mounted in the casing to move the control member in one direction, resilient means, such as a spring 20 to oppose the action of the flyweights, and bimetallic means, such as washers 24, 25 and 26 to increase the bias of the resilient means in response to an increase in temperature. Pressure fluid from a port 5b flows, according to the position of the valve 9, to one or the other of two ports 5a, 5c communicating with opposite sides of the speed varying mechanism, the exhaust passing through the other one of the ports 5a, 5c, a passage 12, and a chamber 1a to a drain checkvalve 32. The valve 9 is secured to the inner race 13 of a ball-bearing, the outer race being engaged by the fly-weights 6. An increase in the temperature of the hydraulic fluid causes the bimetallic washers 24, 25 and 26 to become saucer-shaped and increase the compressive force on the spring 20.
