Abstract

836,439. Valves. BUTCHER, K. L., and COTTELL, E. C. Nov. 21, 1957 [Nov. 22, 1956], No. 35703/56. Class 135. An apparatus for automatically regulating the rate of a fluid flow includes a valve housing 1 accommodating a vertically arranged double beat mushroom valve 12, 13, balanced by being exposed on both sides to the pressure of the fluid passing through the valve, which is actuated by a device responsive to a pressure differential, comprising a cylindrical valve actuating member 26, 27, axially movable within a sleeve member 14 having an upwardly-diverging tapered bore, and which is arranged to be lifted by an amount proportional to the rate of fluid flow through the variable restriction formed between the valve-actuating member and the sleeve. The desired flow rate may be adjusted by means of a manually-operated screwed spindle 17, rotation of which alters the axial position of sleeve 14; further adjustment is obtained by altering the mass of part 26. In a modification the pressure differential sensitive device is positioned downstream of the valve member. Specification 738,773 is referred to.
