Abstract
721,121. Electric furnaces with inductive stirring. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Aug. 7, 1953 [Sept. 20, 1952], No. 21823/53. Class 39 (3) An inductive stirrer for a metallurgical furnace, i.e. an arc furnace, open hearth furnace or hot metal mixer, consists of two or more two-pole permanent or direct current excited magnets 4 mounted below the furnace on parallel, horizontal, synchronously rotating shafts 5, which are driven in the same direction. The pole axes of the two magnets are parallel or displaced in relation to each other by, at the most, 45 degrees, the distance between the shafts being at least twice the lengths of the magnets. The direction of rotation of the shafts may be reversed, and the speed of rotation is where T is the distance between the shafts in cms. and V the number of revolutions per second of the shafts. The metal shell 2 of the furnace within an area having a width at least twice as large as the axial length of the magnets and a length twice as large as the distance between the shafts is made from a non-magnetic material with a high electric resistance, e.g. non-magnetic steel. The stirrer and preferably the shell is arranged to be turned around a vertical axis through the furnace, and the stirrer may be arranged asymmetrically with respect to the vertical axis or plane of symmetry of the furnace or may be moved into such a position to achieve such a rotation of the surface of the charge as to facilitate deslagging. The magnets may have windings 6 and pole shoes 7.
