Abstract
720,765. Gas-cooling apparatus. NEDERLANDSCHE ELECTROLASCH MAATSCHAPPIJ, N. V. Feb. 28, 1953, No. 5677/53. Class 64 (3). A gas cooler adapted for cooling gas derived from the decomposition of carbonaceous substances and for removing therefrom naphthalene and other condensable constituents without excessive fouling of the cooling elements, comprises a casing.1 divided by at least one internal longitudinal partition 3 into two superimposed generally horizontal passages through which the gas flows from an inlet 9 to an outlet 13, cooling elements (e.g. tubes 5) extending vertically through the casing and passing through the partition or partitions with clearance so that liquids condensed on said elements in the upper gas passage can run down them into the lower gas passage. Liquid seals may be provided where the elements pass through a partition Fig. 3 (not shown). As seen by Fig. 1, the casing 1 may be subdivided by partitions 2, 3, 4 into four passages of decreasing cross-sectional area in the direction of gas flow, which are serially connected by headers 10, 11, 12. Coolant such as water flows serially through interconnected groups of the cooling elements. The gas path may be curved Fig. 4 (not shown).
