720,717. Cyclone furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1953, [Feb. 16, 1952.] No. 4285/53. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group II] A furnace for burning brown coal comprises a cyclone chamber 1 which discharges into a secondary chamber 9, a coal feeder 17, and a shaft 15 through which the coal passes, hightemperature furnace gases being directed through the shaft 15. 'The shaft, through which gases from the secondary chamber 9 are drawn by a fan 21, leads to a centrifugal separator 18, which in turn is connected to the burner head of the cyclone furnace. Coal travelling down the shaft 15 undergoes rapid surface heating and drying which causes partial disintegration of the pieces due to separation of outer shells from the cores of the pieces.
